The Value Of Cats

At Advocats, we stand for increasing the value of cats in American society. While we know that is no simple feat we think it can be done by through continue the effort and speaking up. But there is a bit of a paradox when it comes to cats in America. Cats are everywhere. Especially on the internet. Cat times recently put together the 25 best cat memes and lists like this are everywhere.

But unfortunately, cats are also being relinquished to shelters all the time and on a daily basis. Not all these cats make it out. Cat’s are seen as less friendly and femine. We disagree. Cat’s are the perfect pet, especially for a bachelor.

We will be talking about this a lot more over the coming weeks but we want to ask our reader to ask themselves, “What is my perception of the cat?” And after that ask your friends and see if what you think is what you really want others to think.

Let’s advocate for cats.

Ideal Feline Diet

Cats are carnivores,  so they primarily eat meat. Avoid too much of carbohydrates because they make your cat add weight, with the risk of them becoming diabetic. Small amounts of fruits and vegetables are okay, to give your cat the vitamins it needs. Moist food is more recommended over dry food; it contains fewer carbohydrates than dry food. Plus it prevents your cat from going thirsty.

Table leftovers pose no risk, provided they make only one part out of ten of the meal. If the leftovers contain cooked bones, it’s advisable to remove them first. Cooked bones can split into sharp pieces and injure your pet.

How often should you feed your cat?

Two meals a day is a good option instead of keeping the food available to the pet all throughout the day. With meals, you can easily monitor and tell when the cat has lost appetite, as can happen if the cat is sick.

What flavors do cats love?

Each cat will have its taste, so you would have to give several flavors and settle for the one your cat likes the most. Too much of fish, however, is not recommended. They contain heavy metals which can be a health risk for your pet.

Unlike dogs which are pretty clear with what they do and don’t like, cats are much more subtle. This is a problem when it comes to diagnosing pain, but also when deciding if a cat likes a certain flavor. In fact, cats in pain act very different¬†from a neck pain dog. Dogs can be real babies!

How much food should you give your cat?

It depends on its weight and its level of activity. If the cat is mostly inactive, feeding it too large amounts of food will only result in feline obesity. Limit it, so you just don’t starve it. Carbohydrates are especially to be avoided in large amounts. Limit feeding to meals at specific times of the day, so the cat doesn’t overeat.

What about water?

Cats rely on the moisture contained in the foods they eat for water. This is why they rarely drink water. So, the food you feed them shouldn’t be too dry. Canned foods contain enough moisture to quench their thirst, so they will not need to drink a lot. But that doesn’t mean you should supply them with water. In fact, you should ensure clean water is available always. Avoid plastic containers; your cat may get an irritation on its skin. Stainless steel and enamel are okay; they rarely cause an allergic reaction.

A well-fed cat is often noticed by its appearance which is not necessarily being fat. A smooth coat and a lean body show you have given your cat the right diet, which is more of quality proteins and small amounts of carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables.
